It has been some week. Weeks seem to fly by much faster than they did even a year ago. It seems like I have to see things a month or two in advance just to keep from being overwhelmed. I think the speed of my life has to do with the sheer amount of things that keep my time occupied. Between jobs, church, daily meetings, and meals; I find myself being able to only fit about one other thing into my day, whether that be a little Tv, a movie, writing, or reading.
It is hard for me to ever find time to just sit. I feel like I have enough things to do to keep me busy for about a solid 3 years. I realized last night however, how much I love sitting. Of course I rest when I sleep every night, but I think there is a difference between nightly sleep and sitting.
There used to be a time when people would sit on there front porch and simply visit with one another, or think to themselves, or just possibly pray a little prayer. There was also a time in our history when all of us busy Americans were European (as hard is it is for some of us to admit). There used to be what they called tea time. A specific time every day in which everyone everywhere would sit down for tea. Some by themselves and some with co-workers or family.
I was reminded of all of this last night when the power in our house went out about 7 and stayed off till 9:20 or so. I loved what I experienced with my friends. All of us out of power. Unable to use our computers or our televisions. limited to sitting out in our back yard and visiting.
You might think that living with 19 of your best friends in one house would provide you with a lot of quality time together; and don't get me wrong, we have good times, but all to often I find myself trying to think of the last time I had a good conversation with some of my room mates. I was reminded of something important last night.

Oh man, Cortland! That's great! I love how you just wrote a blog about a topic so simple as sitting. Maybe it meant more to me because I was there, and we did have a great time. It's true though sitting is underrated. Our lives don't allow much of it so when the power goes out, it is then we realize how soulful "copping a squat" in lawn chairs, couches and barstools in the backyard really is. Here's hoping for another "brown out" soon. I'm glad I know you. Keep writing!
